Communities along the Georges River, including Bayside, Sutherland and Georges River, are the focus of a new NSW State Emergency Service (SES) campaign, which is aimed at reminding them of their risk of floods.
The campaign, called 'The Georges River has flooded before, it will happen again', looks at increasing awareness of floods and the significant consequences they bring for communities along the river.
NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York said the campaign follows the success of the long-running Hawkesbury-Nepean Floods: The Risk is Real campaign.
"Our mission is to save lives and create safer communities, and that starts with raising the awareness of the risk of floods," Commissioner York said.
"In March, we experienced major flooding within the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley.
"In the months prior, we had worked extensively with communities in this area to make sure they knew their risks, and how to prepare.
"This work led to better prepared communities, and this is what we now want to achieve for those communities along the Georges River."
Commissioner York explained that part of the campaign, an interactive online map, had been created on NSW SES's website, which shows the impacts of various scaled floods.
"This tool will show people who work, live or visit local government areas of Bayside, Blacktown, Canterbury-Bankstown, Camden, Campbelltown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Georges River, Liverpool, Sutherland and Wollondilly, what their risks are," she said.
"It will also provide advice on what you should do before, during and after floods.
"If you live, work or visit any of these areas, please take the time to visit our website and use the resources available to be prepared ahead of potential floods."
