Fines on overdue books and other loan items from Sutherland Shire Council libraries have been abolished.
The move follows a two-month trial of waiving fines on overdue library items.
Mayor Steve Simpson said a growing number of libraries were "recognising fines on overdue loan items can discourage residents from getting the most out of their local library and can have significant financial implications for individual library users".
"Council's recent fines amnesty period during May and June was introduced to acknowledge both the community's resilience throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and its ongoing support for our local libraries," he said.
"Since the introduction of the amnesty, we've received substantial support on this strategy and will continue to honour this commitment to the community by abolishing all overdue fines on loan items.
"This decision marks an important step forward in enhancing positive connections between residents and our services, and one that will hopefully see more avid readers through our doors going forward."
From July 1, all remaining outstanding fines will be waived and the council will cease issuing fines for all overdue items returned in suitable condition, no matter the delay.
"Our libraries are treasured community spaces, where visitors can enjoy ready access to a host of valuable resources which can inspire them to expand their knowledge, skills, interests and imagination," Cr Simpson said.
"We hope this new policy will create opportunities for residents to journey back to their local library and rediscover the host of services, collections, resources and programs on offer."
Items can be returned during opening hours at any of council's local libraries, or after-hours in the 24-hour returns chutes at Sutherland, Caringbah, Engadine, Menai and Miranda.
Policies regarding lost and damaged items will remain unchanged.
