Shock waves were felt across suburbs in the west of Sutherland Shire when "routine" explosives training was conducted at the Holsworthy Army base on Wednesday night.
Noise from the blasts was heard as far away as Cronulla.
Weather conditions may have contributed to the noise travelling so far.
Residents took to social media to share their experiences of what was described as "massive - actually shaking our windows".
"Dog is going crazy," David wrote on the Everything Sutherland Shire Facebook page. "He'd be terrible in a conflict. Give our position away at the first pop."
A spokeswoman for the Australian Defence Force told the Leader, "Holsworthy Barracks is conducting some routine explosive ordinance training, which is part of ADF's normal training cycle".
"We issued alerts through local social media platforms," the spokeswoman said.
