China's Yang Qian has collected the first gold medal of the Tokyo Olympics, winning the women's 10-metre rifle competition.
Yang was the sixth-placed qualifier for the final then produced an Olympic-record score of 251.8 to top the podium.
Russian shooter Anastasiia Galashina (251.1) finished in second place, while the bronze medal went to Switzerland's Nina Christen (230.6).
Galashina topped the leaderboard in the final until logging her lowest score of the day, 8.9, with her final shot.
"I had mixed feelings, joy and bitterness," Galashina said.
"I made a mistake.
"It's a lesson for the future. I got too nervous, held on too long.
"My thoughts were not in the right place, I lost concentration."
An overjoyed Yang beamed that her gold medal was "a gift to my country, I'm so proud".
Australians Elise Collier and Katarina Kowplos both failed to qualify for the final, finishing 42nd and 45th respectively.
Iranian Javad Foroughi won Saturday's other shooting gold medal, in the men's 10m air pistol competition.
Foroughi's Olympic record score of 244.8 comfortably bettered Serbian medallist Damir Mikec (237.9) and China's 2008 Olympic champion Pang Wei (217.6).
Australian Daniel Repacholi, competing at his fifth Olympics, ranked 30th in the 10m air pistol.
