Sutherland Shire Council is calling on residents to provide input into developing a new, 20-year housing strategy.
The council wants to know about residents' own housing preferences, what the future mix of housing could look like and where across the shire it could be located?
Community consultation will take place until August 21.
The council said an important part of developing the strategy was looking at how to provide more housing, different types of housing and the right mix to accommodate the evolving needs of the community as circumstances and lifestyles change.
"One size does not fit all when it comes to housing," mayor Steve Simpson said.
"We want to provide a planning framework that achieves the right type of housing in the right locations, connected to infrastructure, jobs, open space, services and entertainment options.
"What suits one person may not suit another. What suits us today may not suit us in 10 or 20 years, so we're keen to understand what different places and neighbourhoods mean to our community and what attracts people to certain areas or discourages them from going to others."
Director of planning Andrew Carfield said, while housing choices and opportunities available to residents could be influenced by the council, other factors such as market forces, industry trends and state government policy also played a part.
"As our community ages more people are living alone, couple only households are increasing, and small households are forecast to occupy 50 per cent of homes across the shire by 2041," he said.
