Grassroots community group 'We are Hughes' has called for informed people with integrity to come forward and become its endorsed independent candidate for the next federal election.
The group want to endorse an independent candidate to take on Craig Kelly and the candidates the major parties put forward for the seat of Hughes.
We are Hughes founder Linda Seymour said the group was seeking integrity, truth and inclusiveness from a candidate.
"The non-negotiable policy positions for endorsement that have arisen through the 'We Are Hughes' community consultation process are; action on climate change to protect our land and future and so we can fully participate in the global economy, and support for a robust Federal Integrity Commission," she said.
"Importantly, we expect a candidate that communicates with our Hughes electorate about their policy positions.
"We are committed to endorsing an independent that will engage with our electorate."
Ms Seymour said Hughes is an electorate that has been taken for granted by Craig Kelly and the Liberals as a 'safe' conservative seat.
"For years, Craig Kelly has spent his time mocking science, posting prolific climate change denial, and more recently promoting unproven COVID-19 treatments," she said.
"We Are Hughes is about people coming together to say enough is enough.
"We can have a local independent member with integrity and a community-minded outlook.
"Interested people will complete a formal expression of interest to the 'We Are Hughes' team and we will add you to our list of potential candidates for endorsement."
Ms Seymour said 'We are Hughes' would work on an endorsement announcement strategy with its selected candidate once it decides on the candidate.
