Update
New temporary stairs to the Esplanade at the southern end of Cronulla beach could open on Monday after final safety tests.
The stairs will be in place for about three months while a section of the Esplanade between Cronulla RSL Memorial Club and Mentone Avenue is upgraded by Sutherland Shire Council.
A council spokeswoman said a key focus was improving pedestrian accessibility of what is officially called the Cronulla Esplanade peninsula walkway.
"As this pathway is in high demand throughout the year, council is installing temporary stairs to reduce disruption for the many residents who frequently use this thoroughfare," the spokeswoman said.
"Council is working to finalise the installation of temporary stairs by early next week and provide an alternate, safe detour route for wheelchair and prams to utilise while the project upgrades are underway.
"Council will install further signage to assist with direction of the alternate route."
The alternative route will be on streets around the closed section.

Temporary stairs are being installed at the southern end of Cronulla beach to maintain access to the Esplanade while a section is upgraded over the next three months.
The walkway between Cronulla RSL Memorial Club and Mentone Avenue will be closed during the project, which is being undertaken by Sutherland Shire Council.
The council says the works will include:
- Path widening and levelling the grade.
- Renew and upgrade of the handrails.
- Repair, renewal or upgrade of associated infrastructure and facilities including drainage and private lighting.
- Landscaping in the area to improve amenity.
- Upgrade of the stairs that connect South Cronulla to the Esplanade walkway.
In addition, "priority seating" along what is officially called the Cronulla Peninsular Walkway will be upgraded.
The project, which is being jointly funded by developer contributions and the council, is due to be completed by December, COVID restrictions and weather permitting.
