Dads ballet class sparks joy for locked down families

The class was a fun way to celebrate dad's day and a means for the kids, aged 2 to 9, to remain connected while in lockdown.

Amy Fisher, owner of the Bexley academy, has been offering Zoom classes to keep the routine going for the children.

"Online classes have been so important for our ballet community, a place where we can meet, connect, chat, move our bodies, continue learning and just have fun in the comfort and safety of our own homes," Miss Fisher said.

Gathering around their computer screens while bending and twisting with their dads sparked joy for the children, and also the fathers.

Six year old Aria, who has been attending classes at Miss Fisher's for two years, thought it was "hilarious", according to her dad, Chris Kalodikis.

"It was a lot of fun for both of us," he said. "It was great to have that special moment with my daughter and it made a memorable Father's Day in a time when we can't do many memorable things."

He said the dads had a laugh together: "Some of the other dads were very flexible and I was very envious."

He said Aria got a lot out of ballet, including confidence and friendships, and it meant a lot that this could continue while stuck at home.

"At the end of the class Miss Amy puts aside an hour block of time so the kids can interact with each other, show each other things from their week, and socialise. It's a great, positive energy for my daughter to have at this time," Mr Kalodikis said.

Amy Fisher is a finalist for the Business Person of the Year award in the St George Local Business Awards.
