Bayside Council deputy mayor, James Macdonald has called for the urgent repairs to the foreshore walkway at Ida Street Sandringham.
A Notice of Motion submitted by Councillor Macdonald at the recent Bayside Council meeting, called on council to note the urgency with which repairs need to be undertaken to the foreshore walkway at Sandringham.
He asked that the confirm that the engineering detail and design will be completed in the current financial year, with construction to be commenced no later than 2022-23.
Should a suitable grant be identified, Cr Macdonald asked that these works be prioritised for funding and brought forward for delivery as soon as possible.
The foreshore walkway north of Ida Street, Sandringham has been eroded and undermined by wave action and the constant movement of sand along the Bay.
"This area is an important part of the foreshore walk connecting Sandringham and Sans Souci with Peter Depena Reserve.
"However the narrowness of the walkway at this point means that there are very few options for walkers and cyclists.
"Until the walkway is reinstated, all users are forced to use a narrow path to the west of the main walkway. This secondary path is too narrow to accommodate the numbers of people using the pathway.
"Council is currently assessing the best option for the rebuild. This is a complex engineering project and one that will need to be built to withstand an extremely difficult and harsh environment.
"If agreed, these works should be brought forward to be completed as soon as it is possible to do so with an additional funding source to be identified if required.
Bayside General Manager, Meredith Wallace said the current council budget includes $110,000 to complete the design phase and funding of $1,520,000 has been allocated across 2022-24 budgets to complete construction.
