French President Emmanuel Macron has spoken over the phone with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Macron's office says, during which Johnson had told Macron his country wants to restore its co-operation with France.
The phone conversation between the two leaders came just days after Johnson had told France to get a grip and give allies in the United States and Australia a break over a row about a trilateral nuclear submarine deal that tore up a separate French contract.
Macron's office said Johnson requested Friday's phone call and "expressed his intention to restore cooperation between France and the United Kingdom," notably in the Pacific region, on climate issues and in the fight against terrorism.
Macron replied to Johnson that he would wait to see the UK Prime Minister's proposals, Macron's office added.
Johnson's office gave a more upbeat version, saying the two leaders "reaffirmed the importance of the UK-France relationship and agreed to continue working closely together around the world on our shared agenda, through NATO and bilaterally".
They also discussed cooperation against migrant trafficking in the Channel.
Earlier in September, France recalled its ambassadors from the United States and Australia, after the US and the UK signed a nuclear submarines deal with Australia, causing Australia to scrap a previous $A90 billion French-designed submarine deal.
France's ambassador is set to return to Washington DC after Macron spoke to US President Joe Biden this week.
