The surf season has officially started!
Jackson Borg and Lizzie Welborn won the second Bate Bay Gold endurance events at Wanda Beach on Saturday.
Wanda's Carla Papac finished in second place with North Cronulla's William Budd the best local male in 10th.
Wanda's director of surf sport and carnival director for the Bate Bay Gold, Greg Pierce thanked the volunteers for supporting this year's event.
"We host a lot of carnivals and we have a beach area here that's conducive to having this sort of event. You can basically watch the race the whole way along the course," he said. "We shortened the course slightly this year which meant that we could keep the competitors in view the whole time."
Wanda will also be hosting the sixth Wanda SLSC Tradies One Club carnival on Saturday, December 4.
More than 1000 competitors of all ages are expected to take part in the event in a range of water and beach events including swim, board, ironperson, ski, sprints, beach flags and beach runs.
The carnival will provide a much-needed hit out for Nutri-Grain series hopefuls Britney Pierce, Taylar Puskaric, Noah Steiner, Nick Middleton and Nathan Jay.
"There will be some serious competition at our carnival, but it is very much for all levels of ability. The One Club concept is to bring together nippers and older surf sports athletes at one event," said carnival organiser Greg Allum, who also praised the generosity of event sponsors.
"It will be great to see members back to surf sports racing. Like all parts of the community, our sport has been impacted by the pandemic. We'd love to see a huge number of entrants from Bate Bay and clubs across NSW competing and enjoying surf sports."
