The Georges River Council says it is 'proud' to support Craig Young's petition to transform the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium into a multi-sport and aquatic centre.
The council says its support is consistent with its two previous resolutions for the stadium.
"In October 2019 Council unanimously resolved to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the St George District Rugby League Club (as a shareholder of the St George Illawarra Dragons) to promote the development of the Stadium as a world-class, multi-use boutique stadium and the development of the Stadium precinct as a premier sporting hub," a spokesperson for the council said.
"Following a request from the Chairman (Craig Young) on 23 November 2021, and consistent with our MoU, council shared the petition on our website and social media in the lead up to the NSW government's half-yearly budget review in December 2021.
"The publication of the petition is also consistent with council's resolution in November 2020 to support the planning and redevelopment of the $200 million transformation of the stadium of Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.
"Stakeholders in the transformation are ensuring commitment continues and the next stage of funding due to be announced in December 2021 is allocated to the project."
The council says the intent of the Chairman's petition is to advocate for the project funding from the NSW Government.
"It is not linked to, nor does it mention the local government elections," the spokesperson said.
"Council in sharing the petition has ensured it contains no electoral matter and has made no mention of any candidate or the local government election."
