Georges River Council launches its Summer Streets program this month to celebrate the reopening of local streets following the long winter lockdown.
Christmas and night markets, al fresco dining, live performances, a circus school and a pop-up park in the heart of Hustville are some of the events planned to encourage people to get outdoors, reclaim the streets, reconnect and enjoy the long summer nights.
The Summer Streets program aims to breathe life back into the Kogarah and Hurstville town centres and provide a boost to businesses, cultural groups and the entertainment and hospitality industries hit hard by the COVID-19 global pandemic.
Made possible through the NSW government's 'The Festival of Place Open Streets', the Summer Streets program will inject more than half-a-million dollars back into the local economy and create jobs.
Georges River Council's general manager, Gail Connolly welcomed the State government's support and said that there is no better way to mark the remarkable success of what the local community has achieved to end the lockdown.
"Locals and visitors can look forward to an array of activities throughout December 2021 and January 2022; this will be a much-needed boost to revive those industries and communities that are the hardest-hit sectors by the COVID-19 global pandemic.
"The long summer days will give families a chance to enjoy the Summer Streets' outdoor fun."
