A Leader reader has sent a video of what is believed to be a Red Bellied Black Snake in the Royal National Park today.
The snake was spotted on a trail about lunchtime, was not aggressive and quickly fled.
Red Bellied Black Snake have also been found in the Wolli Creek area.
Previously, the Wolli Creek Preservation Society has cautioned people if they encounter a Red Belly but also tells them not to panic.
"There have been a number of sightings of Red Bellied Black Snakes in the local area over the years. Do not be alarmed!" a society member posted on the Wolli Creek Community Facebook site.
"Although highly venomous it is usually placid and will try to avoid humans..
"Walk away and keep your dog away. If you or your dog try to attack a Red Belly it will try to protect itself and someone could be bitten.
"If you leave it alone it will leave you alone!
"I have seen a number over the years along Wolli Creek and Bardwell Creek. I have stood very close to this snake and all it has done is either stayed very still hoping I wouldn't see it or slithered quietly under cover.
"There are no recorded deaths of bites from this snake (because it is so placid). However If you get bitten call an ambulance, if your dog is bitten take immediately to a Vet.
"Black Bellied Black Snakes are found near creeks, swamps and sometimes swimming pools; usually under rocks and logs, and sometimes lying in the sun in garden beds. It's average length is 1.2m."
