THEY almost missed out on nabbing a place in the final, but in the end they took out the whole competition.
Woolooware High School has won this year's National Rock Eisteddfod Challenge held on the weekend.
A total of 55 students from the school competed against other Australian schools, and came first in the open division after they were announced as wildcard entrants.
It was a big win for the Sutherland Shire school, which has been part of the event for more than 24 years.
The students worked hard to create their winning performance, and had been practising before and after class and on weekends since January.
Their impressive performance explored human choices in life, and told the story through Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart — showcasing the narrator's sense of "wrong and right".
The school got the highest scores for drama, costume, stage use, performance skill, set design and for function.
Performance co-ordinator John Nicholson said that the win had been a huge achievement.
"After numerous Saturday nights, working extremely late on the production and normally finishing about 6am, it is amazing to see their dedication paid off," he said.
"This year we reached a milestone and took our results to a record high."
Judges said the performance was "wonderfully directed, beautifully designed and flawlessly executed".
