The state government will seek a World Heritage nomination for Royal National Park, Heathcote National Park and Garawarra State Conservation Area.
The move strengthens the strong and lenghty local push for its listing by Sutherland Shire residents and environmentalists such as Bob Walshe of Jannali and former Royal ranger Bob Crombie.
Royal National Park was established in 1879, making it the first national park established in Australia, and a strong contender for World Heritage listing.
Nature Conservation Council of NSW chief executive Pepe Clarke said the establishment of Royal National Park marked a key milestone in the history of nature conservation in Australia, and around the world.
‘‘It is only fitting that this beautiful natural area, which is so rich in historical and cultural significance, be considered for World Heritage listing.”
The NSW Government’s proposal will need to be supported by the federal government before a formal nomination can be submitted to the World Heritage Commission, the international body responsible for inscribing properties on the World Heritage list.
