Sutherland Shire Mayor, Kent Johns says the council will not convert the Woronora fire trail into a dedicated cycleway and pedestrian path.
Councillor Johns issued a statement on Thursday afternoon following a report in the Leader two days earlier that the project was being considered.
The report was based on a statement released by a spokeswoman for the council that the three D ward councillors supported ‘‘a cycleway and pedestrian link at Bundanoon Road / The Crescent Woronora Heights’’.
The fire trail, which the council has again ruled out opening as a public road, runs from the end of Bundanoon Road, Woronora Heights, to The Crescent, Woronora.
Councillor Johns’s statement said: ‘‘Council will not convert the Woronora Fire Trail into a dedicated cycleway and pedestrian path. “Council is considering a cycleway and pedestrian link on the eastern side of Bundanoon Road from the existing shared pathway to the intersection of Bundanoon Road and the fire trail.
‘‘The project is expected to cost $560,000.
“It is emphasised that council has not taken a formal decision at this stage.’’
