If you’re planning on whale watching this season the advice is to do it sooner rather than later.
Wayne Reynolds, veteran whale counter, said while there were still plenty of sightings numbers will soon start to drop.
‘‘Monday was a quiet day — there were about 50 [humpbacks],’’ he said.
‘‘On the weekend, each day there were well over 70 which is nothing fantastic.’’
‘‘You can expect it to start slowing down soon.’’
Mr Reynolds said he saw more whales early in the morning than later in the day.
‘‘We start counting at 6.30am and see lots of them glowing in the sun.
‘‘When they’re surfacing the sun lights them up and you can see them eight to 10 kilometres away with a trained naked eye.’’
