Update Friday
Police may start fining motorists for ignoring the new ban on turning left into Cronulla Street at the southern end of the mall.
Drivers have been subtly reminded they could be caught on video.
Non-observance has been rife since the trial traffic change was introduced on Tuesday.
A council spokesman said, “We are committed to the safety of our community”.
“As a result, council are currently actively monitoring the situation including site inspections, before and after traffic counts and video surveillance for reporting and data collection purposes.
“We’re currently working with NSW Police regarding enforcement of the ‘No Left Turn’ into Cronulla Street.”
Earlier story
Many motorists are ignoring a traffic movement ban that was introduced on Tuesday to speed up traffic around Cronulla mall.
Dozens of cars were seen making a left turn from Croydon Road into Cronulla Street near the train station.
Although barricades have been installed, smaller cars in particular were having no trouble getting through.
A Sutherland Shire Council spokesman said civil works staff installed the no left turn signage and barricades about midnight on Monday.
They returned on Tuesday and, between 9am and midday, worked near Laycock Avenue, completing line marking and other ancillary work to support the traffic changes.
