Kylie, Leo top of party people list

With the theme for this year's New Year's Eve celebrations being ''embrace'' there was one obvious question to ask Kylie Minogue.

''What will you be embracing in 2013?'' With a captivating look came the answer: ''My boyfriend firstly''.

Minogue, the creative ambassador for the 2013 Sydney fireworks, was referring to her 34-year-old model beau Andres Velencoso who flew in from his homeland of Spain.

She added: ''I have some family coming for New Year's Eve. I love the concept of embracing, it can mean so many different things. I am looking forward to embracing new possibilities for the next year.''

Yesterday, Minogue drew excited fans to Dymocks bookshop in Sydney's George Street for a signing of her coffee table book Kylie Fashion.

Izzy Heath, 19, from Manly who spent the night outside the George Street bookshop, was first in the signing queue. ''You camped overnight. Are you crazy? Weren't you cold?'' Minogue said.

The pop star will press the button to start the fireworks and has helped edit the soundtrack that will accompany them.

The finale will be a remix of her hit single On a Night Like This. Minogue has chosen the colour scheme for the show - magenta, yellow, purple and red - for the 11,000 shells and 25,000 shooting comets that will explode off seven barges spread across six kilometres of Sydney Harbour.

Minogue isn't the only big star in town ready to party. Leonardo DiCaprio and his Django Unchained co-stars Jamie Foxx and Jonah Hill flew in Friday morning on a private jet and headed straight for the Darling hotel at the Star, as guests of the Marquee nightclub operators, the Tao Group.

DJ Sam Ronson, best known as Lindsay Lohan's former girlfriend, and Grammy-nominated DJ Dirty South is also on the New Year's Eve line-up at Marquee alongside celebrity appearances by Gossip Girl heart throb Chace Crawford, Glee's Matthew Morrison and Arrow actor Colton Haynes.

Sydney's Ivy is kicking off its New Year's Eve party early, from 4pm. Bar tsar Justin Hemmes will host events, spreading across four levels and 10 bars.

James Packer and his wife Erica as well as the Murdoch clan including Sarah and Lachlan are believed to be celebrating on a boat in the harbour.

The Mentalist star Simon Baker is relishing his childhood stomping ground at Lennox Head with his family and Mariah Carey is said to be on holiday in Byron Bay with her twins ahead of her Gold Coast concert on New Year's Day. Russell Crowe is believed to be heading to his property in Coffs Harbour with sons Charlie and Tennyson and Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban and their daughters, Sunday and Faith, are with family in Sydney.

But many social types will be tucked up in bed on the night, getting ready for New Year's Day. For the first time, Rose Bay harbourside restaurant, Catalina, will host a celebrity-laden party to rival the annual Icebergs New Year's Day party. The event, hosted by Daimon Downey and Tim Holmes a Court, has become a hot ticket with guests set to include Laura Csortan and Silverchair's Chris Joannou.
