Businessman Stephen Agius was elected new mayor of Kogarah at a council meeting last night. Councillor Annie Tang of the Unity Party is deputy mayor.
Mr Agius, a Liberal Party councillor who runs a chiropractic business in Kogarah and Parramatta, was the only nomination for mayor. He has been a councillor for five years and was nominated by Crs Nickolas Varvaris and Michael Platt (ALP).
‘‘As a long term resident of Kogarah and a business operator, I understand the needs of the community,’’ Mayor Agius said.
Former mayor and incoming Liberal MP for Barton Nickolas Varvaris did not nominate for the mayoral position as he intends to concentrate on his political career. He will remain on the council.
