The state government coastal management grant of $500,000 and the Metro Greenspace funding of $462,000 represent about a quarter of the $4 million spent on the upgrade,
In addition, the council borrowed $2.3 million for the project assisted by the state government’s interest rate subsidy under the Local Infrastructure Renewal Scheme.
The long and complex project involved research, environmental and heritage assessment, design, engineering, construction and landscaping.
The upgrade included the construction of a new bleacher sea wall with built-in seats over the existing sea wall, new stairs with handrails, a new ramp to allow safe access to the beach for surf craft and the mobility impaired, a new a timber deck to reflect the footprint of the previous Ladies Dressing Pavilion, the installation of timber seating along the shore front, upgrade of existing pavement, and installation of lighting, shower deck, seating, bike racks, bins, bollards and interpretive signs.
