With TAFE providers starting up as the newcomer to higher education options, the choices students have in getting a degree have expanded.
Recent figures from TAFE NSW reveal that a record number of students had graduated this month with a degree from various campuses including Sydney TAFE's Design Centre, Enmore, and Northern Sydney campus.
Enrolments had increased from 23 in 2011 to 772 enrolments this year.
Lucia Slappendel, 21, of Kogarah, graduated with bachelor of design (interior design) at the Design Centre, Enmore. She said the three-year degree gave her more practical experience.
"It was different to university where you're really on your own," she said.
"There was only 16 of us in the class, which is great because being in a small group is more personalised.
"The teachers were there for you and there was a support network — it's like a community."
But although the graduate chose TAFE over traditional university, she hopes to continue studying at Sydney University and beyond.
"I've deferred but I plan on studying lighting because I would like to get into residential design," she said.
"I see my future overseas. I would love to work internationally, especially in London."
