A LANDMARK building that had passed its use-by date was demolished to make way for a new multimillion-dollar structure at Georges River College, Peakhurst campus.
The 38-year-old hall and fitness centre, known as a Bini shell, was replaced with a modern building that houses a gym for basketball, netball and volleyball.
A stage, showers, change rooms, toilets, storage areas, a first-aid area and a control room are also in the new hall.
When the dome was built it was considered innovative, but the design became too difficult to maintain.
Engineers said it would be more cost-effective to start again than restore the worn-out structure.
Work started on the new school building last year.
Oatley MP Mark Coure lobbied for the $4 million-plus funding required for the new hall, which will benefit students at the years 7 to 10 campus.
The new building will also benefit students from other schools and sporting organisations in the area.
