The support organisation for victims of violence already has cut seven of its 10 staff and will have to close the doors of its Boyle Street, Sutherland, headquarters and move to smaller premises because it cannot afford to pay the rent.
Enough is Enough founder and chief executive officer Ken Marslew is meeting with Attorney General’s Department officials on Friday to see if he can secure more funding to keep his counselling unit open.
Mr Marslew formed the organisation after his son, Michael, 18, was murdered during a hold-up at Jannali Pizza Hut in 1994.
‘‘We see in excess of 1300 victims of crime year, predominantly from the shire, and our counselling unit is now at risk,’’ he said.
‘‘Six months ago we were looking at closing the doors. We have managed to secure some funding but this is not enough to continue.’’
At the council meeting last night, Shire Watch independent councillor Peter Towell called on the council to help secure the future of Enough is Enough by forming a working party to assist in its survival.
‘‘It is short-term economics to deny organisations like this funding as the people they help will evolve from drawing down from the tax system rather than contributing to it,’’ Cr Towell said.
The council decided to report to councillors on Enough is Enough through its committee structure.
Mr Marslew will be invited to address the council.
