HURSTVILLE Council's green efforts were acknowledged at the recent Keep NSW Beautiful Sustainable Cities Awards held at Concord Golf Club.

The council came home with the Sustainable Water Award for the completion of the $2.5 million Peakhurst Light Industrial Stormwater Harvesting and Reuse Scheme.
Hurstville mayor Jack Jacovou said the council was delighted to be recognised for this innovative large-scale stormwater harvesting and reuse project that would help to save water for later use.
"The Peakhurst Light Industrial Stormwater Harvesting and Reuse Scheme will use approximately 50 million litres of harvested water each year and help to save an astounding 21 million litres of tap water," Cr Jacovou said.
"The project is also an outstanding example of what can be achieved when local government works collaboratively with state and federal partners to jointly fund a best practice, sustainable water-management initiative.
"Also, apart from conserving water, the environmental benefits to the Hurstville region include significant improvements to biodiversity, and improved stormwater run-off quality."
The stormwater scheme has made a big difference to the Hurstville Golf Club which is irrigated by the reused water.
The Sustainable Cities Awards program is a community and environmental awards program for metropolitan communities in NSW.
