Do people text on the toilet?
A recent report answered these questions and more.
The Movicol Bathroom Behaviour Report, investigated Australians’ bathroom behaviour and attitudes, revealing nearly three quarters (73 per cent) of respondents have ‘held on’ rather than using toilets.
In fact, 25 per cent of women surveyed confessed to ‘holding on and waiting until later’ when at a friend or partner’s home.
The report also revealed 82 per cent of those surveyed believe people who don’t replace the toilet paper are the worst, and confirmed most bathroom visitors prefer to fold toilet paper rather than scrunching.
Some people have done questionable things whilst using the loo.
Three in five of respondents admitted to taking their phone to the toilet with them, 44 per cent text whilst using the toilet and two in five confess to answering a call whilst on the throne.
The great toilet seat debate was also covered in the report, revealing that over a third of men believe that women should be the ones to put the toilet seat up.
Etiquette expert and founder of The Good Manners Company, Anna Musson shared her etiquette tips to help Australians improve their bathroom behaviour and attitudes.
"Some of us shy away from going to the bathroom when we’re in situations that are unfamiliar or uncomfortable and this is dreadful and ultimately bad for our health," she said.
"It’s all about respecting those around you but also respecting yourself.
"Many of us forget that there are a lot of health risks associated with holding on and sometimes the most appropriate thing you can do is politely excuse yourself to use the facilities."
Her tips included:
- Put lid down
- Have spray available
- If paper runs out, replace it.
- When using public facilities don't peek under the doors. Knock if the stall (cubicle) appears to be occupied.
- Use the exhaust fan so you don¡¦t asphyxiate yourself or the next occupant.
- At work, don't conduct business in the toilet, clean up after yourself, wash your hands, put the lid down.
- Have spray available
- Have spare toilet paper available and a bin for other items.
- Point out the facilities for guests on arrival.
