Mrs Sanchez has a chance to win the national award, which is announced in Adelaide on October 25.
September 8:
THERE was only one thing that Magda Sanchez ever wanted to do — work with children.
And the childcare educator of Chiquitos Family Day Care, Cronulla, has loved every moment of it. Mrs Sanchez, 42, runs daycare from her house in co-operation with Sutherland Shire Council.
Her passion was recognised this month in the 2014 Excellence in Family Day Care Awards. Mrs Sanchez was named the southern suburbs and Sutherland Shire regional winner.
The annual awards celebrate the role family daycare plays in the learning and development of children, and rewards people who have made a valued contribution to children's lives. More than 2000 nominations were received this year from parents for the awards, which were judged on workers' professional approach to early childhood education.
At Chiquitos, children — 20 months to four years — are educated in small groups, with a focus on individual interaction in a nurturing environment.
Mrs Sanchez maintains strong links to culture at her day care.
"Our approach is one on one, where we help families in the community by expanding cultural diversity," she said.
"Children benefit from things like singing songs in different languages like in Spanish."
Mrs Sanchez is in the running for the NSW and national Educator of the Year, this month and next, respectively.
