Immaculately clean, well-organised and logically laid out, the store is staffed entirely by volunteers and all proceeds go to helping the community.
A project of Hurstville Rotary, the idea was sparked by a visit to a similar shop in South Australia a few years back.
All the donated books are thoroughly cleaned before being placed on shelves.
From history to humour and everything in between, the store has about 15,000 books, with several thousand more in storage.
There is a bargain section where books are $1 each.
Margaret Wood, one of the 30 store volunteers, said traders often told her it was the best second-hand bookshop in Sydney.
"The more we sell, the more we give to charity and we're having a hoot of a time into the bargain," she said.
Mulga Road Books will host a vintage sci-fi and fantasy book sale on the last weekends of September, October and November at 89 Mulga Road, Oatley.
