THE Office of State Revenue in NSW has launched a campaign to return nearly $140 million in unclaimed money to its rightful owners.

A similar move last January resulted in more than 6000 items, totalling about $7.5 million, being claimed.
Unclaimed money can be from inactive bank accounts, superannuation funds, company shares, life insurance policies and many other sources.
Unclaimed money can include refunds, overpayments, cheques, interest payments, proceeds of sale and royalties.
Minister for Finance and Services Dominic Perrottet said that with Christmas approaching, it was a good time for people to take the trouble to check lists using the Office of State Revenue's online tool.

You may have unclaimed money if you:
Have not made a transaction on your cheque or savings account for over seven years
Stopped making payments on a life insurance policy
Moved without leaving a forwarding address
Have noticed that regular dividend or interest cheques have stopped coming
Were executor of a deceased estate
