AN application has been made to establish a Men's Shed in the largely vacant former Fishos Club building at Kyeemagh.
The move by the Muddy Creek Boating and Amateur Fishing Association will add to pressure on Rockdale Council to preserve the site for community purposes rather than hand it over to developers.
Rotary Club of Rockdale and the Australian Men's Shed Association are among application's supporters.
Muddy Creek Boating secretary Bob Young said it was envisaged the Men's Shed would occupy an adjoining area in the undercroft of the building.
He said inquiries about using the building had been received from several community groups.
"The club was established as a community facility and we believe that should be its future role," he said.
The state government has rejected an application to include the land in the Cooks Cove development area, and the council is considering its next move.
Rotary Club of Rockdale president Robert Elliott told the council in a letter they were willing to help with "ongoing formation and development requirements" of the facility.
"As you may be aware, we have previously assisted with the establishment of the Arncliffe Men's Shed and are experienced with the compliance and regulations required," he said.
"Rockdale City is falling behind other council areas in the support and formation of Men's Sheds. The benefits to the community are numerous and beyond doubt."
COMMUNITY IDEALS
Australian Men’s Shed Association said the community ideals and achievements of the anglers club were consistent with its own.
‘‘We understand, while the refurbishment that is required to occupy and comply with current regulations would be considerable, successful applicants have government support and grant assistance to assist in the establishment and operating costs of a Men’s Shed,’’ manager Melissa White told the council.
