ST GEORGE Hospital was in party mode yesterday for the start of its 120th birthday celebrations.
Doctors and nurses donned uniforms from the 1920s before a cake was cut by director of nursing Vicki Manning, local health district board chairman Michael Still and Lamrock Committee president Toni Horsey.
St George's Cottage Hospital officially opened on November 16, 1894, and now has 627 beds and 3400 staff.
The second stage of its redevelopment is due to begin in about eight weeks and will see a new $300 million critical care wing built across seven floors, including operating suites and 120 more beds.
A community appreciation day will be held today, Wednesday, at 7pm at Georges River Sailing Club, Sandringham. Tickets: 9113 2901.
