Sandhills rescuers
The Cronulla community owes a great debt of gratitude to the members of the Cronulla Dunes and Wetlands Protection Alliance ("Success in saving sandhills was a high water mark for activist group," Leader, December 9).
Without their tireless campaigning decades ago, we would not have an inkling of the majestic sand dunes that once provided a unique vista and habitat at North Wanda.
Their efforts ensured at least one major sandhill was saved from marauding developers.
The heritage sandhill stands as a sentinel of how profits all too often hold sway over good planning and commonsense.
Hats off to John Sullivan, Scott Hogan, Annette Hogan and Warwick Kent!

A real pity this group of volunteers were not able to get together 50 or so years ago when Breen Sands and others started to systematically remove as much sand as possible from once massive sandhills that were visible from many parts of Sydney.
If they had, we may still have not just a few low lying remnant dunes as we see today but a real natural playground as it was when my generation were children.
