Woolies' traffic troubles
Back in late October I wrote to the Leader regarding our local politicians' concerns regarding traffic problems around the new Woolworths in Roberts Avenue, Mortdale.
Recently we received yet another letter this time from Oatley MP Mark Coure encouraging support for immediate action to rectify problems at this entry point.
Why is it the responsibility of state and local government to campaign and seek funding for the entrepreneurial opportunism of a company the size of Woolworths?
The Oatley MP expressed no such grave concerns for the entry and exit to the Maso's Club next door or the many other businesses that occupy this same stretch of road prior to the proposed construction of Woolworths.
What also of the single-lane rail crossing from Boundary Road, Mortdale, to Hurstville Road, Oatley?
Stand there any day and watch the cars race to catch the end of the queue. It is also noted in the letter there was no outright objection from Mr Coure to the construction of this store.
His only condition was that it should only proceed if "proper traffic safety measures were mandated".
Need I remind Mr Coure that residents in Oatley so strongly objected to a Coles store opening there that it is not visible from the street.
Further, why is it that funding for any grand entry to the store must be paid by ratepayers — many of whom run opposition small businesses.
Do you realise what businesses you stand near when you campaign in Mortdale, Lugarno etc?
Prohibit right-hand turns into and from the entrance. This would force west-bound traffic to continue to the roundabout and return.
