While it is better than nothing to reduce the signposted Kogarah CBD speed limit a miserable 10kmh to 40kmh, it must be recalled that both lives were lost at considerably lower speeds.
Frankly, wilful motorists react to speed limits with the same impunity as they do to unpaid fines and disqualifications, or phones. The existing humps are better deterrents than unenforced signage.
The crowding of pedestrian employees, school and college students, medical patients, train and bus passengers and alfresco diners in the CBD ensures that even at low speeds someone is likely to be killed or injured by uncontrolled vehicles.
The council also has no authority to enforce the proposed new limits as enthusiastically as its parking restrictions.
