Notorious is back in Sutherland Shire — this time anchored off Jibbon Beach, Bundeena.
Readers may remember a Leader story from 2013 when the ship, also then anchored off Jibbon Beach, drew a lot of interest from passersby.
It is home to Graeme and Felicite Wylie, both 57, of Victoria.
The pair have just completed a 10,000 mile journey from Warrnambool on Victoria’s south-western coast to Port Douglas, and now Sydney.
Notorious is the only re-creation of a 1480s Portuguese caraval in the southern hemisphere.
Mr Wylie built it out of 300 tonnes of recycled timber destined for furniture-making.
Caravals were the ship of choice for early explorers such as Christopher Columbus — and pirates.
‘‘These types of ships were popular with pirates because of their speed and agility,’’ Mr Wylie said.
‘‘We do what we can to stay safe on the ocean but occasionally we’d had quite the exciting movements close to land.’’
Notorious is expected to be anchored at Lilli Pilli tomorrow and, hopefully, will be moored at Yowie Bay for two months as the couple go home to see family in Victoria.
