VOLUNTEERING their time and effort for a worthy cause is the best and most rewarding way to fill their day for many retirees.

Two women who heartily agree are Rhonda Biddle, 66, and Maria Copot, 90. They spend a few days a week volunteering with their local St Vincent de Paul Society charity shop.
"My daughter used to work in [St Vincent de Paul's], and one day she said to me 'Why don't you come in, you might enjoy it' and I've liked it since then," Ms Copot said.
"Well, I used to go to Vinnies and they were always so happy, so I decided that when I retired that's what I would do, and that's what started me off," Mrs Biddle said.
She is in her seventh year of volunteer work;
Ms Copot is in her 23rd year.
Applying to be a volunteer was a straightforward process for Ms Copot and Mrs Biddle, who said they had greatly enjoyed their experiences as volunteers over the years.
"I like work; it doesn't matter what," Ms Copot said. "I like it down the back. Sorting and hanging — that's my job."
Ms Biddle said: "I enjoy the company. They're all so happy and there is a lot of laughter. It's really good, you go in there and your spirits lift."
She said volunteering was a rewarding activity for people of any age.
"People should do it because it gets you out of the house, you meet people," Mrs Biddle said.
"It's better than sitting around the house all day. It's good for meeting people and believe me, you meet such lovely people."
