REAL estate agent Christie Mortimer is flying the flag for the No Land Tax Campaign in Sutherland Shire.
Ms Mortimer, 20, who lives at Grays Point and works in the eastern suburbs, is contesting the seat of Cronulla at this Saturday's election.
The micro-party's candidates for Miranda and Heathcote electorates live in Mount Druitt and West Hoxton.
Ms Christie said she believed that land tax was driving up property prices.
"If we start to abolish it, homes won't be as expensive," she said.
"People around my age have to pay land tax if they buy a property and rent it out."
Asked if abolition would only lead to more demand for properties by investors, making it harder for first-home buyers, Ms Mortimer provided a written statement from the party which said land tax had resulted in less rental housing.
"A search on the Domain website today reveals only four houses for rent in the Cronulla area and 96 apartments," the statement said.
"With average homes attracting in some cases upwards of $10,000 in land tax each year, investors are running away from the residential rental market.
"With less supply of rental properties, house prices continue to be driven up by owner occupiers, who have to buy to get out of the rental market, where a lack of supply has placed significant upward pressure on rents."
MODEST AIMS
Christie Mortimer was asked to stand for Cronulla after signing a petition circulated by the group, which is ‘‘fighting for a fairer deal for property investors’’.
No Land Tax Campaign hopes the exposure gained by contesting every lower house seat will win it an upper house spot.
