"I have a whole stack of phones in a drawer at home and I knew I wasn't going to throw them into the rubbish," she said.
With World Environment Day, MobileMuster is encouraging people to recycle the 22.5 million old mobiles.
Ms Peile said finding the time to drop them at a MobileMuster recycling box was tricky — as well as running a small business, volunteering as a Girl Guides leader, competing in rowing competitions and acting as a rowing coach, her life was hectic.
It was hearing a statistic about recycled phones that made her act swiftly.
Ms Peile said one kilogram of recycled mobile phone waste was equivalent to mining 10 tonnes of earth to access resources for new phones.
"I sat back and went 'wow, I had not even thought of that concept'," she said.
MobileMuster promises not to resell your phone, and to destroy all data. They accept all brands and types of mobile phones, batteries, chargers and accessories.
Phones can be dropped at Australia Post outlets or posted in for free.
