Duo get awards
RUGBY LEAGUE: St George Illawarra Dragons duo Joel Thompson and George Rose have been named in the NRL Academic Team of the Year.
The Indigenous All-Stars representatives also received of the NRL Indigenous Academic Excellence Awards at the NRL’s Community and Player Education Awards.
Thompson is enrolled in a diploma of community services at TAFE Illawarra. Rose is doing a graduate certificate in commerce at the University of Sydney.
Four make mark
FOOTBALL: Four Sutherland footballers have helped Australia qualify for the 2016 AFC Under-19 Championships in Bahrain.
Tom Glover, Jordan Holmes, Cameron Devlin and Alex Gersbach were all part of the Young Socceroos squad that finished second in group J at the qualifiers in Laos.
Australia lost their final group match 3-0 to Japan on Tuesday night but still managed to qualify as one of the five best runners up.
Devlin made his international debut in a 2-0 win over Laos in Australia’s second group game while Holmes played in goal.
Australia had earlier beaten the Philippines 6-0 in their first group game.
One-day wonders
CRICKET: Hurstville Oval will host its final game of the national one-day competition on Monday.
The ground has seen a flurry of runs in its first two games and could see a lot more when a star-studded NSW play Tasmania.
St George’s Moises Henriques and Kurtis Patterson could be involved along with Sutherland’s Shane Watson and Steve Smith. Play starts at 10am.
