The $63 million project, which is due to be completed by the end of 2017, includes partially demolishing the facade of the existing main hospital building to allow redevelopment.
A two-storey building will house a new emergency department, 60 acute inpatient beds, internal courtyards and ancillary spaces.
Parts of the existing hospital building are to be refurbished for medical imaging and storage.
