St George police were called to St George Hospital at Kogarah on Sunday after a doctor was threatened by a patient’s family.
At 4.45pm police were called to the intensive care unit after reports a family were trying to force their way in.
During that time a doctor was verbally threatened before police moved the family away from the hospital.
NSW Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord said it was time for the Baird Government to come clean on the extent of violence in NSW hospitals.
‘’It is unacceptable for the Baird Government to seek to keep these incidents quiet,’’ he said.
‘’Doctors, nurses and paramedics have long been complaining about violence in hospitals. Covering up these incidents does not make them disappear or make staff any safer.”
It comes after a round table was held in Sydney on Monday to look at ways to deal with increased violence in the state's hospitals.
St George Hospital General Manager Leisa Rathborne said strategies were in place to ensure the hospital is safe.
‘’There have been no reports to management of staff requesting escorts to their cars,’’ she said.
‘’The security, safety and welfare of staff, patients and visitors at St George Hospital is paramount.’’
