Roosters star Joseph ‘‘BJ’’ Leilua on 12-month good behaviour bond 

No conviction was recorded and the court dismissed six of seven charges laid against him at the Downing Centre Criminal Court yesterday.

Magistrate Carolyn Barkell found him guilty of using an iPhone in an offensive manner  after a confrontation with Cee-Jay Silbery early on Saturday, May 26.

Leilua, 21, walked free after the court found no evidence to convict him of the assault charges and breaching an AVO.

The Arncliffe footballer, whose full name is Joseph Ikenasio Poiva Kelemete, spent the night in custody after his arrest and he was stood down from playing against Canterbury at Allianz Stadium two days later.

Leilua sent photos of Ms Silbery’s vagina to her brother and best-friend after he learned she had been cheating on him, a court heard.

‘‘I was filthy, so I sent to her brother, ’’ Leilua said during an interview with police.

‘‘I wanted her to feel, like, sad.’’

 Magistrate Barkell said the pictures were offensive despite hearing an argument from Leilua’s barrister Sean Grant.

‘‘I understand you may have been cheated on but being cheated on is no excuse,’’ Magistrate Barkell said.

The prosecution’s case against the footballer crumbled when Ms Silbery failed to show up to court and one of her friend’s lied under oath about seeing Leilua pour a drink over another girl’s head.

Leilua admitted to the court he had about eight glasses of pre-mixed Jack Daniels on his night out during the NRL season and video footage showed him walking with difficulty outside the Railway Parade hotel.

Footage from within the bar area showed Leilua approach Ms Silbery but did not capture any assault or the allegations that he pulled her hair and licked her face. 

Leilua was supported by a large number of family members and solicitor David Trodden, who is chairman of Balmain Tigers Rugby League Football Club.
