The Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia has taken out a top award at this years NSW Environment Awards.
The Brighton-Le-Sands organisation was awarded with the Nature Conservation Council Member Group Award for demonstrating an outstanding commitment and success in conservation.
Society President Suzanne Medway said she was thrilled with the award.
‘’We were absolutely thrilled. It’s quite an honor to receive the award seeing the great work of so many environmental groups,’’ she said.
The society was formed 107 years ago and has grown to not only promote advocacy but also to encourage education through university scholarships.
Mrs Medway has been a member of the society for the past 30 years and said a lot of things had changed.
She said that while pollution and loss of habitat remains a problem there were great strides thanks to social media.
‘’Social media has really changed things because now the message gets out there so quickly,’’ she said.
‘’It gives everyone a voice.’’
She said the society will continue their advocacy work and work with other groups to bring about change.
Nature Conservation Council chief executive Kate Smolski congratulated all the award winners.
“The environment movement in NSW would be nothing without the thousands of volunteers who work tirelessly to protect the places we love,’’ she said.
“These awards recognise the work of some of the community’s most outstanding individuals and organisations, they also celebrate the achievements of the movement as a whole.”
