The shire is home to the next junior Subway Surf Series event which is on from Monday to Wednesday this week at North Cronulla beach.
The series represents an important link in the ‘pathway to the podium’ developed by Surfing Australia, allowing young surfers to progress their junior careers and potentially reach the top.
Emerging professional surfer and Cronulla local Jared Hickel was working in a Subway store when he entered his first Subway Series and went on to win two events.
Now Hickel is at the next level and is competing in the qualifying series for the WSL. Jared is an advocate for grassroots surfing and helping the younger generation fulfill their surfing goals.
“These junior contests get you ready and experienced for the next level of surfing. Subway’s collaboration with Surfing Australia and their promotion of a healthy and active lifestyle is good for aspiring young surfers,” he said.
Since announcing their support of the event two years ago, the partnership with Subway has seen the grassroots competition grow significantly from three events to a seven-event Pro Junior competition.
It also provides the winning athletes with an opportunity to win a coveted world title at the WSL Junior Championships in 2018.
