St George Christian School teacher Karen Binns was recently awarded the International Society for Technology in Education’s Making IT Happen award, during a conference in the US.
Mrs Binns attended the conference in San Antonio as a NSW nominee.
Since its inception in 1995, more than 500 educators from across the world have received the award.
Mrs Binns won the award for improving digital learning opportunities for students. She is well known at her school for trying new things and introducing new technologies.
“I like being adventurous and, in teaching, I’m always looking for ways to make learning more interesting and engaging,” she said.
“Technology was a natural fit as it makes the impossible possible for students. New technologies can modify and redefine existing pedagogy.”
Mrs Binns has been teaching for over 30 years. Last year, she set up a design lab for junior school students and also helped set up a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) group Think. Create. Connect.
The group connects students from different schools through non-competitive, design challenges and it is used by St George Christian School, St Finbar’s Catholic Primary School and Inaburra School.
She also visited Japan this month for the International RoboCup Junior competition with the school’s national champions, Thomas Ramsay and Peter Tyas.
