Dozens of people had the chance to pose for photos and receive a blessing from the Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church during his visit to the Sutherland Shire on Wednesday.
It was one of the first stops for his Holiness Pope Tawadros II during his 10-day pastoral visit to Australia.
It is the first time he will visit Australia after he was ordained in 2012.
He arrived at Sydney Airport earlier in the day where he was greeted by queues of people. Australia's Coptic community is the third largest outside of Egypt.
He arrived at Caringbah just before 11am where he laid the foundation stone of the new building and headquarters of the Sydney Diocese called the ‘’Light House”.
He also met with dozens of bishops and priests from across Sydney as well as some lucky local families.
Dr Khayrat Girgis and his family were among the large crowd that lined up for a chance to meet Pope Tawadros II
He is a well-known face at Cronulla Medical Centre and said it is one of the only times in his career that he left the practice during the day.
‘’It’s a big occasion, we’re very happy and very lucky to be here,’’ he said.
‘’It is a once in a lifetime opportunity.’’
Sally Girgis agreed.
‘’It’s exciting because this is the first time he’s come to Australia. It’s nice to be here in his presence and receive a blessing.’’
Sue Habib was happily clutching her keychain blessing after meeting Pope Tawadros II.
‘’Your heart skips a beat,’’ she said.
Pope Tawadros II is expected to make a special visit to St Mary and St Mina Coptic Orthodox Church in Bexley on Friday from 8am.
