The Cronulla Sharks have flat out denied any interest in a move for NSW representative Jarryd Hayne.
Reports emerged on Tuesday that Cronulla were interested in securing the one-time NFL and rugby sevens convert despite Hayne having one year remaining on his contract with the Gold Coast.
But Cronulla denied the reports in a tweet put out on the club’s official Twitter account on Tuesday, calling them “fake news”.
The Sharks already have Valentine Holmes as their incumbent fullback and Josh Dugan on his way to the club next season from St George Illawarra.
It is understood Cronulla still have room under their salary cap for next season and have not given up on adding another quality player to their squad.
The Sharks have lost a handful of players for next season with Jack Bird (Brisbane), Gerard Beale (New Zealand Warriors) and Jeremy Latimore (St George Illawarra) to leave the club. A number of players, including 2016 premiership winners Chris Heighington and Sam Tagataese, remain unsigned by the Sharks for 2018.
Cronulla have already secured Aaron Gray from South Sydney and Ava Seumanufagai from Wests Tigers as well as Dugan for next season.
