Closed door talks are being held over a development proposal for one of the best sites in Cronulla.
The proposal covers the the bowling club – Club Cronulla – in Croydon Street and the adjoining council owned car park.
Details of the proposal were not revealed.
Council staff prepared a report, which will be considered by the Services Committee on Tuesday night before going to the full council later in the month.
The council papers provided the standard explanation for matters considered in closed session:
“This matter is being considered in closed session as it relates to a proposal for the sale or purchase of land where prior knowledge of this proposal could confer an unfair financial advantage on any person.
“On balance, the public interest in preserving the confidentiality of information about the reserve price outweighs the public interest in maintaining openness and transparency in council decision-making because the disclosure of this information would put the council at a competitive disadvantage in its negotiations with a prospective purchaser, preventing it from achieving a ‘best value for money’ outcome for the community.”
The bowling club was one of three locations identified in a study of strategic sites in Cronulla with potential for tourist and visitor accommodation, which was released in August this yesr.
A consultant produced the Strategic Sites Report as part of the draft Cronulla Town Centre Public Domain Master Plan.
The present zoning for the Club Cronulla site allows a maximum building height of 16-20 metres (5-6 levels).
Options suggested in the report involved buildings of up to 22 metres, with the bowling greens retained in some form.
One option was to extend the development site to cover the whole block bounded by Kingsway, Purley Place, Croydon Street ansd Wilbar Avenue.
The development could house a new full-line supermarket and an extra 55-100 public parking spaces, the report said.
The other sites in the report were the Northern Gateway on Kingsway opposite the mall and railway land at the southern and eastern side of the station.
The council agreed to further investigation of the sites.
