National Carers Week (October 15-21) was an opportunity for the community to recognise the 2.7 million unpaid carers in Australia who support a family member or friend who has disability, chronic illness, mental illness or frailty due to age.
It is estimated that carers provide more than $1 billion worth of unpaid care per week.
Lily Brown has cared for her husband Larry for several years.
He has multiple medical concerns and is also terminally ill with cancer.
‘‘Being a carer can be mentally and physically exhausting but also rewarding,’’ Mrs Brown said.
‘‘Our days at home can be very long and tiring; attending to his needs, medications and grooming, besides doing my usual household chores in order to make the living environment a pleasant one.
‘‘My reward is he is still able to enjoy life and we enjoy each other’s company. I am grateful he is still around to annoy me!’’
Mrs Brown’s is grateful for the help she receives from the Carer Support Service at Sutherland.
‘‘I thank the Carer Support Service and other services which supply me with some respite and support; also companionship with fellow carers who are in the same situation as I am,’’ she said.
The Sutherland service has been supporting unpaid carers for 21 years, through information and referrals, support groups, advocacy, educational and recreational programs.
